María Teresa Rodríguez: the visionary pianist of Mexico


El February 18th 1923 the Mexican pianist is born Maria Teresa Rodriguez Rodriguez, first woman to direct the National Conservatory of Music.

Originally from Pachuca, Hidalgo, she learned to play the piano at four years of age.

At eight, he debuted playing plays by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy and Beethoven.

So he continued his studies in the United States with the teacher Alexander Borowski.

Although Europe also developed, after obtaining a scholarship from the National Institute of Fine Arts.

In front of the Conservatory

 

María Teresa Rodríguez arrived at the National Conservatory of Music, by the hand of Carlos Chávez.

With him he collaborated in his composition workshop, until he also taught.

Years later, he chaired the Conservatory from 1988 to 1991, being the first woman to direct it.

He was soloist of the main orchestras of Mexico, of the symphonic ones of Boston, Cuba, Dallas, Moscow, London and Lima.

He offered recitals with Manuel M. Ponce, Julián Carrillo and Claudio Arrau.

Not forgetting that he also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, directed by Jose Pablo Moncayo.

Member of the jury of the Federico Chopin International Competition in Warsaw, Poland, won several national and international awards.

Among them: Distinguished guest of the city of Denver and the Order of Cultural Merit granted by the Polish government for spreading Chopin's work.

Maria Teresa Rodriguez passed away on September 4, 2013, at 90 years old in Mexico City.
