El documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, by Laura Poitras, won the Golden Lion, the highest award at the Film Festival of Venice.

Poitras earned much-coveted recognition for her shocking documentary about the photographer Nan Goldin and his fight against opiates in the United States.

The 58-year-old filmmaker, born in Boston, thus adds her second prestigious award after obtaining the Oscar for the highly controversial documentary citizenfour, 2015, which he produced together with Edward Snowden, who made public the massive surveillance program on a global scale by the CIA and the NSA (National Security Agency, for its acronym in English).

Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett was proclaimed this Saturday best actress at the Venice Film Festival for her brilliant performance as orchestra director in the film TAR, by Todd Field, a drama that talks about the abuse of power.

This is the second time that Venice has awarded the acclaimed actress, 53, who has put her fame and talent at the service of the fight feminist, after I'm not There by Todd Haynes, where he played Bob Dylan fifteen years ago.

On the other hand, the jury also sent a message against censorship in Iran by awarding the Special Jury Prize to director Jafar Panahi, imprisoned since July in his country.

Despite his absence from the room, the filmmaker received a long standing ovation from the Venice public, after the announcement of his award.
