blurring the lines between repulsion and seduction, Maisie Cousins creates thought-provoking images that explore the relationship between the beautiful and the grotesque.
Their close ups photographs show a visual game that produces a strange sensory disorientation. The perspectives it shows are mesmerizing.
Ever since this 25-year-old girl started photography through a Tumblr account, her photos have not left anyone indifferent. Although her style is not for everyone.
“His approach to art is hedonistic and self-indulgent. He explores power, femininity, nature, technology, the body, and indulgence,” he explains in his terse web biography.
To begin with, one of the things that has made this artist stand out is that, in addition to being suggestive, she is perfumed. The images of her usually carry the perfume of the designer Azzi Glasser known for his perfumes of several thousand euros.
“My art is not just visual. I've been working with Azzi for a year discussing fragrances that turned us on, from earthy scents to wet grass to Parma violets," Cousins explained to Dazed magazine.
All with the sole objective of turning the visualization of his art into a sensory experience and, even, sexual.
"I always felt that something was missing, that something was lost when the final product only existed as a photograph, especially since my work is truly immersive," said the artist whose work, deep down and as shocking as it may seem, aims to capture the essence nature itself through natural compositions that emulate the body and sexuality of women.
“It can't be helped, we all produce and broadcast things. We are made to look tough but our bodies are soft. Living entities, that breathe and secrete. We are nothing refined, but a reality. I hope the smell hits them when they enter the exhibition and that it lingers in their memory when they leave," Cousins summed up.
In the end, if your art is based on mixing the senses the best thing would be to see it, smell it and maybe get excited. But since we don't all live in London, at least now you know Maisie Cousins.
