Peter campus is a video artist who is characterized by being part of the first generations of video makers and by his innovative closed-circuit installations where time and space merge.
What is video art? It is the taking of images and sounds by means of a video camera to express a certain idea. The current was born in the United States in the early 60s, a context in which film and television dominate the informational formats.
Since then there have been great video artists around the world such as John Jonas, Dan Graham, Nam june paik, Wolf Vostell, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Peter Campus, Douglas Gordon, Ira Schneider, Eve Sussman, Beryl Korot and Bill Viola, among others.
Peter Campus was born in New York in 1937, studied experimental psychology at Ohio State University.
His career as a videographer began in the 70s inspired by filmmaker Michael Powell and video artist Bruce Nauman.
In addition to video, the artist has dabbled in photography and installation. In his first works, Campus tried to alter the space with his video camera and for the public to participate in the experience.
In 1973 he carried out Anamnesis, a work where he confronted the viewer with his own double through an image transmitted live and a second with a delay of three seconds. The objective of this piece was to play with the time, space and movement of the visitors in the exhibition room.
Campus makes use of his knowledge in psychology to experiment with "the self" (instance of the human psyche).
