violence without war

El Salvador is a small country in Central America.. For many years, this nation has been considered one of the most insecure, even without being at war. And it is that, out of a population of 6.5 million people, there are around 25 thousand members of criminal groups. In addition, approximately 9 thousand people are in prison. As if that were not enough, it is estimated that 60 young people belong to active gangs.

The Maras, as they are known, they have been locked in conflict since the 1970s. This contributes to the increase in violence in the region. And with gun violence, there always come homicides. There is even a group called Sombra Negra, who carry out surveillance trials and extrajudicial killings. All of them from suspected gang members, since they are never truly tried. His activity undoubtedly reflects the gangs he is trying to combat.

Recycling of insecurity

The company TRIWA enters the transformation of the watch industry. as an acronym for Transforming the Industry of Watches. The Swedish watch company was founded in 2007 by four friends who wanted to create products that they would use themselves.

Now, they create watches with the metal of destroyed weapons. Ludvig Scheja, Creative Director of TRIWA, said that they decided to build a watch with a purpose that went beyond the conventional. One, that it's not just about status and style. But at the same time contribute to a more peaceful world.

In this way, the new material has been named Humanium Metal. And it is distributed to commercial projects around the world to fight crime and poverty.

Humanium Metal

The first weapons destruction program dedicated to the project was in El Salvador in November 2016. Working closely with local authorities, a ton of Humanium Metal was produced. Another batch was made in November 2017, when another 1,825 illegal firearms were merged. These were sent to creative brands around the world, including TRIWA.

For his part, T.RIWA returns 15% of sales that go directly back to the areas where the weapons were collected. By depriving gangs of their weapons, the humble guard supports those who are victims of violence. But also to those who fight for peace. These watches made from destroyed weapons are a good cause to wear on the wrist.
