The Urban Mountain project has a peculiar story: Zhang Lin, a teacher residing in the mountainous area of Renji, Beijing, China, spent the last 6 years building his dream home: an imposing mountain of rock and vegetation emerging from the top floor of a 26-story building. In architectural and creative terms, Zhang Lin takes a huge credit for the originality of his project. But the construction is illegal, because although Lin’s own space and obtained permission to build a villa on two levels, the rock structure does not have the necessary permissions. Also, Lin did not ask permission from his neighbors, who have had to endure the incessant construction noise, leaks and worry knowing that the structure lacks the necessary stability. So far, it has not carried out any action against Lin.
