Sotheby’s is a major British auction house, which works with artwork and collectible pieces. It currently has several offices around the world.
A couple of weeks ago, Sotheby’s sold the oil Rome, Aventine View (1836) by the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner at 38.6 million euros. The auction house announced: It is the most important sale for a work of a pre-20th Century British artist. They also added [is] the most important landscape of Italian capital ever painted.
Four buyers raised the initial price of the work (which was not sold since 1878): between 18.7 and 25 million euros.
The auction coincided with an exhibition of the artist in the Tate Britain and a biopic directed by Mike Leigh.
