Jonathan Owen is an artist born in Liverpool in 1973 and graduated from Edinburgh Colleg of Art. He lives in that city and is dedicated to the production of drawings, painting, photography and sculpture. His work has been classified as a “smart vandalism”, because he takes up the idea of traditional sculpture, including busts, and reinterprets them reducing to their essential qualities to reach a new meaning.
As Jonathan Owen explains, the production of the pieces begins with photographs he finds in several books, that he edits in order to remove the original parts of the image and begin the construction of the narrative from the drawing, thereby creating an incoherent version of the original.
Between March and April 2014, the Ingleby Gallery organized a major solo exhibition where were shown his drawings and sculptural projects. Currently, and as part of the exhibition “GENERATION” Jonathan Owen’s work is presented at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and at the City Art Centre of Edinburgh.
