I do not believe in the eternal feminine, an essence of woman, something mystical. Woman is not born, but rather becomes a woman. Simone de Beauvoir
Throughout history, women have fought for equality in a world dominated by men. From the scientific to the political arena, women have fought in different trenches, to achieve gender equity. An example of this activism in the art world are the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous group of women that come before the public with gorilla masks and pseudonyms of leading women artists who have broken paradigms. Together, they produce posters, books, video projections, and performances that bring out the sexism in various fields, without leaving a touch of irony and humor. Social and collective complaints are part of their art, that although those who are raised are the Guerrilla Girls, women from the community who come to respond to their call, feel identified with them. Thanks to their anonymity, Guerrilla Girls can be any or all of us can be.
