The art toys correspond to a relatively new design line, which emerged in the mid-90s in Hong Kong, consisting in figures of 5 to 20 cm, usually made of vinyl or wood and in limited editions. The market for art toys or designer toys, spread westward during the last decades, currently enjoying great prestige among collectors. Coarse Studio is a gallery based in Hong Kong, with handmade products in fiberglass resin or vinyl, made by artists like Pete Fowler, Spanky or Tomoyuki Washio. Each piece represents a character that has a particular story, someone who expresses some element of the human condition. The latest project of Coarse Studio, called Freedom Candles, is about a series of candles for Amnesty International when consumed, discover in its interior, a figure symbolizing hope and freedom. Coarse Studio products are artistic pieces that merge aesthetics, touch, and the narrative that each object is capable of expressing.
