The lecture “Criticism like legitimacy and dissent”, by Nestor Garcia Canclini, under the 1st Ibero-American Colloquium of Art Critics. In this lecture, the professor Canclini spoke of the artists, of how both, geographical borders and between disciplines, are currently an illusion, thanks to technology, these interconnections, are evident in events such as the biennials and fairs. In these exhibitions, participants celebrate nomadism, so they valued peripheral aesthetics, seeking to include the excluded. This tyoe of behavior is also reflected in how they work together, creating collectives or cooperatives who manage projects, creating a post-authonomus art.
He explained the difference between social and artistic criticism. The first refers to the commercial oppression, and the need to standardize. The second, to alternative ways to create institutions and ways of social revolt. The critic becomes a nomad, so the legitimacy does not occurs only in a place or an event, but in a blog or in a catalogue.
The colloquium continued with the intervention of Joan Peiro with his paper “Killing the messenger, the work is the message”, spoke of a work of art out of public spaces, which now belong to the designers (advertising). He also commented on the importance of not loosing sight of the referent (the work), in a dialogue between the viewer and the critic where matter ends up being the artist and the work the critic.
The panel discusion was opened with Maite Garbay, who spoke about the embodiment of critics, finding that at the time it is written, acquires “body”, leaving open the question of how to tear it.
